Safety Window Film: How Does it Work?
Westgate’s safety film is used in many public locations such as offices, schools, hospitals and commercial buildings to increase the safety of their windows. Shattered glass, whether it’s due to vandalism, criminal activity or accidental damage, can cause injury to people and damage to property. That’s why Westgate’s safety window film is the perfect addition to any window in a commercial setting.
How is it applied?
The safety window film is applied to one side of the glass and is thicker than standard solar control film. Optimum visibility is still maintained as the film is completely clear. Because the film is multi-layered and applied with a strong adhesive, it is much thicker and therefore strengthens the glass. This makes it more difficult to break through.
How does it work?
The safety window film works as an invisible barrier between the window and environment around it. Despite the thickness being only .007 inches, it provides a break strength of 175 pounds per square inch and requires 5-6 pounds per square inch to be peeled off. Despite the film being entirely unobtrusive, the figures show it provides excellent added safety and security to any window.
What are the advantages of the safety window film?
The most obvious benefit of applying the safety window film is increased glass toughness as once the film is applied it makes it more difficult to break through the glass. This can work to deter criminal damage and increase the overall security of the building. Because of this, insurance premiums could subsequently improve.
The safety window film helps to protect personnel from broken glass in the event of a shattered window by holding the shards of glass together, keeping it as one piece rather than multiple fragments, which is what would happen with a regular window without the film applied.
Our safety window film also helps buildings to comply with workplace regulations, specifically regulation 14: windows and transparent or translucent doors, gates and wall. Part of which refers to glass as a safety material “which, if it breaks, breaks safely.”
Additionally, there is also a dual safety and solar film which provides all the advantages above but also reduces the effects of heat, glare, and uv fading within the building.
