What is industrial fogging?
Industrial fogging is a type of aerial disinfection that has gained popularity in the food sector over the last 10 years. The process is used to reduce airborne microorganisms and to prevent transmission of potential contaminants. These can come from low risk areas, people and fabric of the building or as aerosols from the cleaning process. End of production cleaning and washdown procedures tend to be selective to food-contact surfaces. Whole room aerial disinfection also enables difficult-to-reach places to be thoroughly disinfected.
It’s estimated that more than 50% of chilled food manufacturers conduct this method of disinfection in addition to their normal cleaning and disinfection routine. It’s most commonly used in high hygiene processing environments and where food such as cheese and cured meats are processed.
How does the fogging process work?
Through pressurised air, small particles of disinfecting solution are released into the air, which form a fog-like gas that disperses to all areas within the specific space. The tiny particles settle on every surface, forming a thin layer to control microorganism contamination.
Fogging takes place after all cleaning and disinfection of food contact surfaces has taken place and is not an alternative to surface disinfection.
Containing fogging mist in industrial environments
It’s essential to contain the fogging mist within the specific area and no one should be in the area during the fogging process without appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and respiratory protective equipment (RPE) as it can cause breathing difficulties. It can take around an hour for the fog to be emptied before personnel can be allowed to enter.
Flexicurtain is a retractable curtain wall that can be used to provide temporary segregation when fogging takes place. Made from anti-fungal materials and resistance tested against a range of cleaning products, it’s perfect for use in food manufacturing environments, especially as the installed solution provides floor to ceiling segregation.
The curtain installs quickly and cleanly and can be designed and manufactured to any height or length, with the addition of vision panels if required.
Flexicurtain can be used when fogging needs to take place and be contained to protect employees and other areas of the plant. To find out how Flexicurtain can help during aerial disinfection contact us at Westgate.
