Hoardfast: Protecting hospital patients from Aspergillus during refurbishment

One of the sectors we work frequently in is healthcare. Specifically within hospitals, we’ve provided our Hoardfast range to help with a range of healthcare refurbishment projects that have served to protect patients.

Not only do the Hoardfast panels provide privacy for patients and help hospitals adhere to dignity regulations, the components actually help with maintaining hygiene standards throughout the duration of refurbishments.

Hygiene is obviously an ongoing responsibility in the healthcare sector, and the burden increases when necessary refurbishment works are carried out. However, our wipe clean, hygienic Hoardfast panels are ideally suited to sensitive hospital environments.

Crucially, they protect patients from aspergillus.

What is aspergillus?

Aspergillus is a type of mould that is found around the world. Aspergillus spores survive well in the environment and have been cultured from unfiltered air, ventilation systems, and dust produced during the course of hospital renovation and construction. Aspergillus rarely poses a threat to normal healthy people. However, it can cause severe illness and even death in highly immunocompromised patients. Aspergillus is the most common form of invasive fungal infection and can be recognised as a common black mould in moist surfaces, and in organic matter. It can be found in both commercial and domestic settings.

Aspergillus in hospitals

If a hospital is doing refurbishment works on walls or a roof that has suffered any water damage, then the biggest risk to patients is the spread of aspergillus. It is widely accepted that invasive aspergillosis can be linked to construction and refurbishment activities within or close to hospital sites.

Contaminated dust dislodged during hospital renovation and construction is one of the main causes of aspergillosis. Patients do not need to come into direct contact with the source of the mould, as spores can be transmitted through the air.

Some people with damaged or impaired immune systems are more susceptible to invasive aspergillosis. The condition is usually diagnosed in a person with low defences such as bone marrow transplant patients, those with low white cells after cancer treatment, AIDS or major burns. This is the more serious condition but in more common, less serious cases it can still cause sickness and allergic reactions. These can include conditions such as aspergillus bronchitis, aspergillus sinusitis, chronic pulmonary aspergillosis, allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) and “fungal asthma” (SAFS).

Hoardfast in hospitals

The Westgate team is familiar with the strict requirements of hospital environments, which has played a central part in the systems design. Crucially, the Hoardfast range contains panels that adhere to strict fire regulations, and many panels within the range have a 2.7m standard panel height option, specifically created to fit the average hospital ceiling height. This contains any dust or mess created throughout the duration of the refurbishment and helps to stop the spread of aspergillus spores. Planning a hospital refurbishment? Contact us at Westgate to find out more about how our Hoardfast range can be a valuable addition to your project.
