Different ways to increase the energy efficiency of your commercial property

With tightening budgets and more regulations relating to energy consumption and the effect it has on the environment, it’s unsurprising that businesses are looking for ways to increase the energy efficiency of their commercial properties.

Not only does an increase in energy efficiency mean a reduction in your energy costs, but an important reduction in your business’ carbon footprint. Here are a few different ways to save money and the environment simultaneously.

Understand your energy consumption

Before you start looking for ways to reduce your energy consumption, you must first understand how much you’re using. Getting an accurate measure of your energy usage will give you a benchmark to work off. It will also allow you to highlight the areas where you’re using the most and the least amount of energy to give you an idea of where you can improve.

According to uswitchforbusiness.com, the average energy consumption for businesses is as follows:

Lighting

For expansive spaces such as warehouses, factories or large retail properties, lighting can make up a significant percentage of the overall electricity bill. Even smaller spaces which require lights on for lengthy periods of time can see the effect on their electricity bill. Switching to LED lighting can dramatically reduce both the amount of electricity used and the cost of the electricity used.

Whilst LED lighting is on average 14 times more expensive to initially purchase than incandescent bulbs, in the long-run they work out dramatically cheaper. This is because LED lights have a significantly longer lifespan, provide the same amount of illumination but use less electricity. On average, LED light bulbs have a lifespan of around 30,000 hours compared to the 1,000 hours you get from incandescent bulbs. Installing motion sensor lights or lights on a timer in areas that don’t require constant lighting can also reduce your energy bill.

Adequate insulation

Inadequate insulation can result in large amounts of unnecessary heat loss through walls, floors and roofs. Now, commercial buildings must have the necessary insulation to keep up to code but by going and above and beyond the bare minimum, buildings can be more energy efficient, quieter and healthier.

Different types of insulation offer different amount of heat loss reduction. For example, cavity wall insulation can reduce heat loss by 35%, solid wall insulation can reduce heat loss by up to 45% and roof insulation can reduce heat loss by 25%.

Commercial Window Film

A simple and affordable way to increase the energy efficiency of your building is by installing a window film. Heat reduction window film reflects unwanted solar energy and heat away from the building to reduce the need for cooling air conditioning units, which, through constant use, can significantly increase energy consumption and energy costs. Commercial window film can be added to almost any window type, quickly and with no disruption to work within the property. Westgate’s heat reduction window film has been used in a variety of different commercial settings, including schools, factories, offices and retail stores.
